If you boot from the install CD for Jaguar, you can run the disk
utility from the CD. After the boot has completed you can select the
disk utility from the install menu.

If OS X is install on the machine an alternative is to start in singler
user mode. This is done by holding down [command] S when the computer
starts. This will boot OS X in a text only mode where the file system
will be mounted read only. A lot of information will be displayed as
the computer boots up and eventually you will be presented with a text
prompt.

Once you get the text prompt you type in "fsck -y". This will run the
unix file utility "fsck" with the modifier "-y" telling the utility to
fix everything it finds wrong. After "fsck" has ran it will return to
the text prompt. You should run "fsck" until it reports no error at
least twice in a row.

After "fsck" has done its job and you are back at the command prompt
you can finish the startup of OS X by typing "logout" at the command
prompt. OS X will conitinue with its normal boot process at this time
and you will be back at the familiar graphic interface.

Even if files are damaged and need to be replaced, you will still need
to make sure the hard drive is error free before any more work is done.
If it is necessary to reinstall Jaguar or any OS X you can just run the
installer. The installer will not remove or modify any of your existing
OSX users or user installed files, but will only replace or install the
files necessary for OS X to run.
