Yeah, I had all kinds of problems with that setup too. Turns out Apple says specifically that you should install OS X and OS 9 in the _same_ partition. When I repartitioned and installed them both in the same partition, problems vanished. Setup is now OS X 10.2 & OS 9.2 on a beige G3 (orig 300 MHz, so a C ROM) w/ an Apple G4/400 MHz CPU. I have the OS on the original 8 GB SCSI drive, and a 57 GB IDE drive installed.
Give that a try, and let us know how it works out for you... And one other thing, before installing, be sure your Energy Saver, Screen Saver, etc. are OFF. Otherwise the machine has the annoying habit of sleeping during the install. If that happens, it's back to Square One.
