One other practical tip, after you repartition, install OS 9 first, 
then OS X. The OS 9 installer won't install over OS X, so if you 
install OS X first, that also sends you back to Square One. But, having 
two partitions is your problem, the exact same thing happened to me! 
The machine was fubar right after a clean install on two partitions. I 
repartitioned into one big partition, installed 9.2 and 10.2, no 
problems.
