This is my second attempt to add a large hard drive to a Blue and White G3. The drive
is recognized and partitions and formats correctly, however when I install OS X 10.2 ,
10.1, or OS 9, the installation process quits giving various error messages
complaining about the hard drive.

Last year, after several tries to add a Western Digital 80 GB drive I ended up
installing the new drive in an IMac and moving the old iMac drive to the G3. But now
the B&W G3 really needs more room, so I bought a Maxtor 7200 RPM PC133 drive. Once
again, I am experiencing the same problem.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how it can be fixed?

A reference I ran across on Google mentioned that there was an improved IDE controller
chip on later B&W G3's. See:

My computer uses the CMD PCI646U2, but not the 402 version. Does a later version of
this chip fix the problem? I have use of surface mount rework equipment and it would
be easy to install the newer chip. And if I manage to find and install this chip, does
anyone know if the existing ROM will run the new chip?
