Paul,
I am far from an authority on computer hardware; however, I've been
down this same road. I have the same chip and it caused me just the
same kind of grief. According to all the research I've done, even if
you can find the chip, it will not work. Apparently there are some
small differences in the motherboard that precludes this.(Can't
remember where, but I've read this several places,) The solution is
pretty simple, but it costs: a new PCI ATA controller card. This will
give the ability to add up to 4 additional, modern (meaning
larger, faster) ATA IDE or EIDE devices and will supposedly give you a
bit better drive performance to boot. I got one of these cards for
about $52.00. Plug and Play, and it works as advertised. By the way,
consider yourself lucky that you didn't install the larger drive. I
managed to complete the install with a 20Gb, and had quite a few
problems with data corruption. Lost the whole disc once. Check around
some more at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com and you'll probably find that
adding the card is the best way to go. (By the way, our machine is
referred to as the 'Revision 1' B&W.)
These machines still have a bit of life in them, don't they? Hope I've
saved you some time.
Vic Esposito
Glad to see that
