I spent the better part of this weekend attempting a fresh install of 10.2 on a beige G3 233, 640 RAM, 40 mb ATA. What I am left with at this time is a machine that will not boot in either X, OS 9.1, or via OS 10.2, 9.0, 9.2, 8.0, Norton, or G3 start up CD's. An 8.0 starter up floppy is read by the machine, but elicits the message that this start up disk can not be used with this mac.
The installed 9.1 freezes early on with extensions on or off. Even though I completely erased the OS 10.2 partition with Disk Tools, I get the OS 10 white screen that just sits doing nothing. None of the installer CD's boot even with the press of "C" on the keyboard at start up. Attempts to zap pram on start up fail. With one exception all attempts at installing 10.2 with the installer ended in "sleep" or a freeze up. The one time that the 10.2 installed correctly without sleeping elicited what appeared to be a good installation, but the classic mode did not boot and after exhausting other methods of fixing the OS 9 system I decided to attempt to reinstall a clean OS 10.2. In reading this list's archives I noted some suggestion that pram issues may be causing some of the problems. My main questions: Are there other ways of zapping the pram if the keyboard does not work or you can't boot anything up? Does a G3 floppy start up disk exist? Are there any good ways of preventing G3 sleep during install other than changing energy saver control panels, moving the mouse constantly, or deleting energy saver preferences? At this point I would be just happy to be able to reformat everything and do a clean insall of OS 9. Thanks John -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
