Interesting!  It doesn't "bong" when you try?  
Well, you should be able to reset the pram by removing the battery and
letting it sit for a while.  I don't know if you've tried booting
while holding the option key, that's the way I boot MacOS 9 on my
office Beige.  Also, when I installed Darwin, I used XPostFacto- even
though the machine is supported- because it was suggested by the
Gnu/Darwin folks.  If you're brave enough to try again, you might look
into it.

You might also try booting into OpenFirmware and seeing what's there-
I bet that's what's confused.  I think there's a way to set the OF to
the factory default, you might look it up if nothing else works.
