There are several OS X books I've seen recommended, though I've never seriously looked at one. The problem with printed guides and manuals for OS X is that updates come so fast that it's impossible for them to address the most likely problems. Consider that 10.2 was released only 3 months ago and there have already been 2 updates, with 10.2.3 due in no more than a couple of weeks. That will make 9 releases since I first installed 10.1 less than 15 months earlier. In addition to new system versions, there have been updates to the various 'i' apps, security updates and more. What was a problem worth writing about yesterday won't be a month later. Today's nifty 'how-to' may be meaningless by the time the ink hits the plates.
Where books probably are useful is in providing a detailed overview of how things work in OS X and how to use it's UNIX underpinnings. I'd dearly love to know which configuration startup file does what, where it's located, what it's named, and what parameters are available, but I haven't found that in print or online.
