G'day from Oz, Paul

I've just plunged for a G4 500 and radeon 7000 for my 233 G3, along with
3 x 256 PC133 sticks. Hopefully they should arrive this afternoon from
OWC. It's supposed to be overclockable to 533. Not REAL easy to install,
& suggest you follow every link & read/print.

The G4 supports Quartz Extreme in Jaguar, but there are REAL mixed
feelings about whether to enable it or not.

I've read somewhere that the Mac accesses memory at the speed of the
slowest stick, and the faster the whole lot are, the faster it will access.

You have a 768 meg RAM limit. Dead easy to install, with precautions.
OWC have instructions buried somewhere.

Suggestion : I already have a 7200rpm 40Gig Maxtor, and it's made an
appreciable difference, particularly with Jaguar.

As for a usb or combo card, if you have a Rev A rom, you can have REAL
problems

I also have a 5 partitioned Maxtor 80 Gig usb1/2,Firewire external, that
will go straight onto a 19" or 20" iMac when they arrive. It flies with
FireWire, real slooooow with usb 1. Very handy to have external backup.

Also, a 4 port generic usb 1 card, & a 3 port FireWire. Took 5 goes to
get a suitable usb card.

usb is driving a 4 port powered hub, an Epson 830 printer, Canon Lide 20
scanner, LogiTech cordless mouse, & Wacom tablet. No problems.

G3's take a usb 1/2 card, but usb 2 can't be used (except with Jaguar).
Jaguar is supposed to support usb 2, but I don't have a usb 2 card to check.

A lot of old SCSI peripherals don't work under Jag, but my Zip 100 does
fine.

If you buy any int/ext drives, only use the Mac Drive Setup Utilty in
9.x, or Disk Utility in Jag, as the formatter.

If you're interested in Jag, I suggest reading the following, taking
note of the mentions re memory.

Santa
