I recently created a web page for the first time. I don't know much
about computers but I had to have a webpage to showcase my art. I got it
done by downloading a tutorial on HTML and following their instructions but
substituting my own material in place of their examples. I was writing the
HTML myself and did not use composer or any page authoring app. Now I feel
more comfortable with HTML and wouldn't hesitate to use it, although you
must proofread your code very carefully. I really recommend this
experience. Even if you decide to rely on page authoring tools later on,
your understanding of what they are doing will be greatly improved. You
also need Fetch or some other FTP enabler. I used Fetch, but I think
browsers can also "publish" (a little out of my depth here). If you go
through the process of putting a site up with links built in etc., you get
an amazing feeling for what is possible. Even a novice can download a
complex page as source and change the content and tweak things to create a
page that is beyond their assumed skill level. My own site is not finished
but if you want to take a look at it go to
<http://members.rogers.com/mccannj4>. John.

P.S.: If you are looking at the source code, there is a "right click
prevent" segment at the beginning which I didn't write but downloaded and
pasted into my own code to prevent PC users from"appropriating" images. (It
doesn't work on Macs.) A friend recommended this. I'm not sure if I will
retain it. It's not foolproof and seems a little mean-spirited.
Also check out Dave Raggett's pages on HTML on the web. Very useful
material about browser safe colors etc.
