Certain programs require G4, especially video like iDVD and the latest iMovies,
I think. The price difference between the G3 and G4 is now minimal. I have a n
OWC 466 mhz which was easy to install and trouble free.

The Altivec business isn't always documented with the upgrade. You need
seperate programs in 9 and X to get it running, but after that, it's transparent
and trouble free. Powerlogix offers both.

You do not need separate software for Altivec to work. Perhaps you are referring to the cache software, which you do need.

However, OSX itself make extensive use of the Altivec unit in the GUI.

Bottom line: If you're going to use OS 9 go for the G3, if you're aiming for OSX, get the G4.

I've got that G4 in my beige and am quite happy with it.
