If you reinstall the os after putting in the new zif it may sense the G4 and load the appropriate altivec software. If you don't care to do a reinstall, you need an Altivec activator. Softlogix has one on their website.
I guess Altivec activation is installed in all versions of X. Some filters in some versions of Photoshop need an Altivec extension to take advantage of the G4. These are available on the Adobe website. By the way, the cache software and Altivec activator will crash Classic if you use your 9.x System for classic.
