>I have a beige G3 DT I plan to upgrade, can somebody tell me why are Zif 500
>mhz G4 upgrades so popular in contrast to 400 mhz G4 Zif processors.

The main reason is overall speed boost. A 400 Mhz G4 is 50% faster than a
266 G3 while a 500 Mhz (or 533) is about 100% faster than a 266. I am not
getting into the speed boosts of the Altivec unit since we are talking
about 2 G4s which will boost processing in G4 enabled apps and OSX, but on
non Altivec apps work just like a G3.

Most people when they upgrade want to get as much out of the upgrade that
they can and don't want to go only part way. Until recently 533mhz was the
top speed you could get on a beige. Sonnet recently came out with a 1ghz G4
for beiges for about US$579. but I think this is overkill on a beige
because of the systems limiting factors (bus speed, video etc)

>Could you give me an idea for a good brand G4 upgrade.

I have an OWC 533Mhz that has been rock solid in both 9.2.2 and 10.2.6. The
one disadvantage to the OWC (and I know some other brands) is that to set
the speed, you need to set small jumpers on the motherboard of the
computer. Not impossible to do, but can be frustrating couple of minutes
for someone with fat fingers. I used a pair of tweezers and had them set in
about a minute and a half.

More important than the brand is the seller and guarantee, especially for
international sales. The zif will either work or not after your first test.
The first test should run for at least 8 hours and be something that taxes
the processor. A lot of people have suggested running the graphing
calculator program in demo mode because this does tax the processor.

If the chip passes with no crashing or more commonly freezing up the
system, you should be good to go. Otherwise talk to the seller about
replacing it or getting a refund.
