As related to the "Why are old Mac's so expensive??" thread, your "What's my G3 worth?" question is highly relevant--particularly with regard to your 'where do I get a USB Card" issue.
I hope Dan is right about the prices of G4s falling. At some point someone needs to put up a "Low End Mac Price Calculator." When you add the cost of better usb, firewire, fast ethernet, fast drives, throughput, graphics card and ram, CDRW---(also CDRW that works with new CDR blanks) also mouse that is not falling apart--all of that stuff starts to add up.
So it seems you can still get $250 for your Beige G3. I have these machines, and I think that I can keep an old machine to do one old thing, but after a while, they just get too old. Sometimes I have trouble remembering all about System 6.5.5--although what a breakthrough system 6 was! Of my 16 macs, 2 have gone bad (and I wasted an enormous amount of time in denial) one is a road apple but available for backup use, 3 are obsolete, 2 are dedicated to phone service.
Low End Mac was created to deal with the old 68030 machines (I used my IIci until 2000, and lately I have been thinking I might go back to it so I can use Word 4.)
BUT the fact is that the G3 came out SIX years ago. Can you imagine trying to run XP on a six-year-old, cutting-edge 233 Pentium II? People don't even want to try. But some people want to run OSX on a (admittedly faster) 233 Beige G3 and they also want to run it on old 8600s, 9600s and even 7300s.
But you know, if I can pick up a refurbished eMac for $699, or how about a 1 gig G4 for $1140? What's my time worth?
Sean pointed out that he has an old 120 meg drive. (I remember paying $5000 for a 300meg server drive in 1989, with an MTBF of 10khours). I really keep my old SCSI Boxes because I am ABSOLUTELY SURE I will need them someday. But my new 160 gig drives hold 1300 of those 120 meg drives--so backup isn't an issue. If you can find a use for his 120 meg SCSI drive, maybe you can find a use for my old PLI drive that takes 40 meg removable hard drives.
You might be a redneck if you don't know what's under the tarp in your yard. Scary.
