I resisted going to OSX for a while, but have never looked back. The iPod works extremely well with this combination and charges whenever it is in the dock.
The beige G3's have gotten so dirt-cheap (on eBay pretty much all the time in the $60 to $90 range) that you might consider getting one and dedicating it as a music server. A 233MHz version will do fine---I'm using two of them in my home as music servers. It will do fine with 128 megs of ram. This allows you to use your present computer solely for its present uses without having to update to OSX if there's some reason you can't. (If you can, I sure recommend it!)
Feel free to email if I can tell you anything else. I've pretty well got these things doing what I want them to do and will tell you what I've learned.

Does anyone use their G3 with an iPod? I'd like to get one, and I'm not
clear on the hardware & software requirements. From what I gather from
apple's site, OSX is "required" with the newer (3rd gen) iPods. I have OS
9.1 and am currently trying to update it to 9.2.1 because I have heard
elsewhere that this is sufficient for use with at least some iPods. I don't
really want to put OSX on my computer. Any advantage on going on to 9.2.2
for the iPod?
Someone on another list told me there can be some difficulty using a
firewire PCI card w/ an iPod because it won't provide power to the iPod, but
that the difficulties are minor, mostly when updating the iPod software,
requiring plugging and unplugging. I updated my iTunes to version 2 at his
suggestion, for use w/ iPod.
If I succeed in this I will probably change to a larger hard drive next.
I appreciate any advice on this.
