I have a 1998 Beige G-3 that I bought as a full system

Somehow, altho it was upgraded by the previous owner
to OS 8.6, the tower has downgraded to OS 8.1 again!!
Go figure!! It must have happened between the time he
deleted some programs in order to sell it to me, and
the time I first booted it up. No hint of any presence
of another operating system on the hard drive except
8.1. Puzzle for all of you out there in OldMac land.
Can this happen?

Yes, it can. Older Macs where not as sensitive to multiple OSes being on the same drive. In fact there was an old utility called System Switcher (or something to that effect) that you could use to bless and unbless OSes and boot to a different OS on the same drive.

We are presently searching for his
boot-disc and not having luck yet. I have discovered
that it could cost $120 to buy the 8.5 or the 8.6 disc
from HardcoreMac.com.

Apple sells all of their OSes that were on CD (starting with System 7.5.5) for $99. You won't find it on the web site most likely (although the OSes used to be there), so you'll have to call them.

That seems like a lot. Poweron
Computers no longer supports it. Apple might give me a
download if I can find a way to receive it. Can I
download to a disc at a cafe computer and then use
that disc?

Yes, you can download the installer and burn it on to CD and install it. The disk may not be bootable. You may have to boot the Mac off 8.1 and then run the 8.5 installer. I would do a clean install to start off with fresh copy of 8.5.

That might work. Or I can pay a technician
to do it. Or...my local Mac Users Group tried to help
but so far, no solution that is cheap.
This has become a special issue for the important
reason that dial-up modems now are requiring OS 8.6
and so are DSL modem installation programs. At least
the one at SBC/Yahoo does. I feel stuck. The previous
owner was using it on Ethernet, but I can't get on.
So, what should I do, genii of the vintage Macs? (Is
that how you write the plural of "genius" or not?)
    Carl.
