The Rev A beige G3s shipped in July 1998 had OS 8.1 (with enablers) included with it. We received eight of those that year. Carl, if you have 8.5, you can upgrade to 8.6 freely using an OS update download from the Apple site. This can be done in one step, 8.5 -> 8.6. There it stops, unless you find/purchase OS 9.xx. This would be installed in one step. OS 9 comes in several retail flavors; depending on what you find, it may be 9.04, 9.1, 9.2.1, 9.2.2 (the last). Also available (and what you have to watch out for) our machine-specific OS 9 releases that were meant to go with certain Macs, like an OS 9.2.1 installs for a late model G4. If you buy an OS 9.04 CD from a swapster, hold out for a "retail" version of the OS. You can then upgrade to 9.2.2 easily, but afaik, it too is a step by step process, 9.04 -> 9.1 -> 9.2.1 etc. (one does not update from 8.6 to 9.x). Hope this helps (someone!), and sorry if its a reiteration of any sort. Best regards, Dana
