Carl, Unfortunately ya might not have any recourse, as far as the shady dealings of the previous owner. Unless ya physically saw, with yer own two eyes, that the beige G3 was indeed running OS 8.6, ya have no way to know that it wasn't merely represented as having OS 8.6, but was in fact running OS 8.1.
Have ya priced OS 9 installation CD's, or even considered going to OS X? I'm kinda having a bit of trouble with the concept of OS 8.1 even being on a beige G3 of the vintage that ya describe. When I ordered my AIO G3, directly from Apple back in August 1998, it came to me with an OS 8.5 installation CD. Sorry that ya ended up with a shady "deal," here. It sounds like when the previous owner "deleted their own files," they really reformatted the hard disk, and installed whatever was on the nearest retail CD. Hope some others, here, can offer ya better guidance.
