...I was lucky, I had a mini tower as well as a desktop g3. So I swapped the tall ram into the taller case.
You could try selling the ram on ebay and buying correct sized ones. I don't like the sound of hacking away parts of the computer in order to make them fit. You could also consider getting a minitower g3 on ebay, they are quite cheap these days.
