The printer has a name, and I don't know how to get to the thinking bits
to either re-name it or just to look around.

I don't know about the Laserwriter Pro, but for my Laserwriter 16/600 I used Apple's Printer Utility, to make changes to the printer's setting, etc. You will also need the appropriate LaserWriter 8 Chooser Extension.

LaserWriter 8, version 8.7 is available only with mac OS 9. Version 8.6.5 is available only with Mac OS 8.6 The latest standalone LW8 printer software available online is version 8.6.1 The drivers, extensions and utilities are installed during the normal installation of the Mac OS. If you did a Custom Install of the OS, you will need to do a Custom Install (or use Tome Viewer) to install the LW software. Apple's Printer Utility usually requires a Custom Install. It is also available for download from Apple's web site. (check in the older software list, under the support section. The name is Apple Printer Utility 2.2)

If you have not already done so, take a look at Apple Knowledge Base Document #30154. It lists all the printers, their appropriate printer drivers and the cables to use. And, I think you can still download the User's Manuals for all the Apple Printers.
