I have read about some issues with Office XP and Office X. I believe some of
it has to do with Unicode in Office XP and the way it displays characters.
It's my understanding that Microsoft has not updated the Unicode in Office X
to display these characters. See if this link works. It's from Macfixit. I
don't know if this pertains to your exact problem, but it might help you
head in the right direction.
