Brian,

My coworkers have the same problem when I email them files. If I save to a disk, they can open them. But when I email a file, it gets sent in two pieces. Only one of the pieces actually works. It also seems to make a difference how they have their PCs configured to handle attachments because some have no problems opening my documents.

I was wondering if OS X Mail does encoding differently. IT did say apple-double but anything should decode that, it's not really apple-specific anymore. BUT I hadn't messed with this yet, as I have sent her many many jpegs that open fine. I reasoned that if it was a MIME-encoding issue, those should have issues as well

OS X mail sends *two* attachments for each file with Word docs...you know, this *might* be the problem. Most mail clients work fine with it, but some show the first attachment only, which is only the resource fork of the file.

(note, this isn't a peculiarity of mail.app, which is actually *properly* implementing the RFC's associated with e-mail, but the clients which have sloppily decided that there cannot be more than one attachment to a file with the same file name. Moreover, it's the fault of Word, because there isn't anything associated with the resource fork of Word data files, so it doesn't even need to exist.)

We ran into this in the past with our old web mail client. We found it was a peculiarity of that client, switched client software and it's working ok now. I suspect there are other mail clients that fail.

I'd forgotten all about that...we last saw it over a year ago.
