you might get away with extending the cable from the connector at either end, however,
making the cable into a "Y" by branching off from the middle connector is very, very
likely to cause major problems as it will create an impedance mismatch and hence signal
reflections which is a serious problem for signal quality on the cable.  you're best 
bet
is to get or make a longer cable.  the parts are available from digikey.com, and other
places, as are custom made cables, though you'll have to figure out which cable and
connectors you want to use, not just tell them "ide" cable as they make any number of
custom cables with several different brands of cable and connectors and different 
numbers
of wires and pins.
