QE on a PCI card gets you no more than a 3-5% performance boost. In return you get crashes and other slowdowns because QE will swamp the PCI bus, which is *why* apple didn't enable it for PCI cards in the first place.
Speed is not necessarily the issue - it's frame rate. Enabling QE gives a greater frame rate to Quartz animation and so vastly improves the feel of OS X and makes it feel faster. As for the crashes and slowdowns i have suffered neither in 12 months of using my Radeon with QE enabled in OS X. I don't doubt it puts a lot of load across the PCI bus though, I dunno YMMV.
