I believe (as stated in other posts) that this is probably an "outgoing authentication" issue. Some services do authenticate your user name and password on the way out (SMTP), but most do *not*. You may have your Entourage set up for smtp authentication and it may not need it. Make sure there are no settings enable for smtp authentication.
hum. Do whatever is necessary in Entourage to cause it to log the transaction with the server, try sending mail, then examine that log. It will tell you what happened; smtp transactions are easy-to-read text.
