Well, I finally figured out what was wrong with my backup Typing Tutor CD, and why the program on the hard drive refused to recognize it and kept asking for the original CD instead (the program won't work without the CD in the drive). I thank everybody who tried to help and it was all excellent information that I'll no doubt put to use in other situations.
In this particular case, though, the problem had to do with how Toast 4.1.2 handled the disk image when burning it to CD-R-- it was putting it into a folder! On the finished (defective) backup CD, when you put it into the CD drive, what appeared on the desktop was not the big "Typing Tutor 7" symbol as with the original CD--instead a small icon of a CD showed up labeled "Typing Tutor 7" underneath. Double-clicking that icon revealed a FOLDER with all the application stuff inside, whereas the original CD has all the app stuff sitting right out there in the open, NOT inside a folder. I didn't realize that Toast had put the disk image into a folder on the copy CD, and I don't know why it does that either, but the program won't recognize it in there. (No, I didn't drag-and-drop the disk image into Toast, I hit the "New CD" button and then "Add" to get it in there. Someone once told me that was the correct way to do it. Maybe I should use a different format than "Files & Folders?" But no other format on the menu seems to work right). Anyway the solution, in making the backup CD all over again, was to put the disk image into Toast like before, only this time, before burning the CD, move the stuff OUT of the folder that Toast created for it and put it back into the open (that's called the "root level" of the CD, right?). At first I wasn't able to move the Typing Tutor app out of the folder, until I realized that the folder had the same name as the app. So I changed the name of the folder, then removed the app from it, then threw the folder away. Then I burned a new copy CD, and this one WORKS. When you put it into the CD drive, the big Typing Tutor 7 icon appears on the desktop exactly as with the original, and the program on the hard drive accepts it as if it were the original and runs fine. PROBLEM SOLVED! So, maybe I wasn't using Toast correctly to burn the disk image onto the CD? I wonder if there's a way to prevent Toast from inserting the image into a folder like that to begin with. At any rate, things are fine now, the students have a copy CD to beat up on instead of the original, and I know how to make another one when I need to. Thanks again to everyone for all the help!
