You really need an adb keyboard with a Beige.  It gets confused without it,
particularly since it looks for the start button.  The problem is that the usb
bus doesn't become active in these older machines until well into the startup
sequence.

You can use a usb keyboard and mouse, no problem.  Just hide your adb keyboard,
but keep it attached to the computer as a startup switch.

There are lots of old adb keyboards floating around.  My school just recycled
dozens of them. Keep looking.
