My generic (made in China) USB keyboard has a power button.
Will it work as a startup switch? Its owner's manual is long gone.
I know that USB PCI cards are cheap these days - especially the old standard version - I'll probably get one
anyway but what you pointed out here I found valuable.

You can use a USB keyboard, but your beige does not give a trickle flow of electricity to a pci usb pci card to allow you to trigger the startup process from a usb keyboard. The keyboard will work fine as a keyboard, once the usb extensions load.

In other words, you can use a usb keyboard, just not start up from it. Also, if you need to trouble shoot your mac and start up with extensions off, your mac will not see the usb keyboard. So keep your adb keyboard handy.

But the real question is- has anyone found a usb keyboard that is as nice to use as any of the adb ones? I have used a number of usb keyboards and they all feel like toys from the dollar store, not the main piece of equipment that I interface with a $2499 ( when new) piece of precision computing equipment like my Mac.
