Thanks for the replies to my previous post, I now have about a week before I have to decide whether to nab an old beige G3 or not. To add to the complication though, I may be able to get an B&W G3 as well / instead. It's not all a bed of roses though, as it has been heavily cannibalised for parts.
I have yet to actually see the machine, but on a description from someone even less Mac experienced than myself it has 'no slot in the blanking plate' (based on the photo on the LEM page), so I take this to mean that there is no removeable drive (ZIP I presume as there's no floppy on these). There is also no memory (not a major issue I don't think, especially as it would likely have been small modules), and no HD (again, not a major issue). It does however lack a PSU, which may or may not be an issue as I've no idea what format the Mac uses. Are they 'borrowed' from the PC world and ATX ones or are they custom Apple ones? If the latter, are the expensive or difficult to find? Does this model share a PSU format with another model (possibly the same as the older beige ones)? My suspicion is that it is most likely custom Mac and not the same as older models - in which case this untested machine may be to much of a risk or too much effort to make it worthwhile - it is very tempting though, at the right price! I guess the main issue is whether the cost of getting it running again would be uneconomic compared to purchasing a slightly newer complete system - assuming the motherboard and processor are good! -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
