Definately, space inside the cases isn't something I'm familiar with. It looks a lot better than the units I have opened (pre PPC mainly), but a picture doesn't really compare to hands on experience. > >My main concern is the overall cost once it is up and running again. > >I've seen B&W G3s for just over the 100ukp for system unit only on eBay > > I hadn't realised they had gone down in proice so far. On further investigation that may be a peculiarity of eBay. Although I am by no means 'in the know' as to where to purchase Mac kit at good prices, I've come across 2ndchancepc.co.uk where a basic B&W G3 appears to be retailing at around 349ukp +vat (and presumably postage). > >and this barebones looks likely to be about 50ukp, which feels a bit > >high to me > > A *good* (i.e. Rev 2 400 or 450 MHz) G3 B&W will likely set you back 3 times that, > depending on what size hard drive, RAM etc. it has in it. There seems to be a lot that is down to the motherboard revision, and getting a Rev 1 appears to be a bad choice whatever model you go for! > >but I'm no Mac expert. Yup, I was already unsure about the beige G3. It seems possible but by no means easy to do what I want, and for a relative newbie that sounds like a recipie for disaster! > >I'll probably get there and find that is a good price and as a result they've gone!! > > I'd be marginal if someone offered me a Beige G3 for ?50. If it looks good in the 'flesh' (motherboard and processor in tact, I know there's a lot of wiring missing beyond the parts) then I may give it a go. I would guess that I could sort out new memory, HD, PSU, keyboard and mouse for around 100ukp to 150ukp ish (based on 256M and 80G) which looks likely to give me a good spec machine for the bottom end of the OS X compatible boxes. I can probably save on that by initially using spare bits I have lying around, although that will be lower spec. That would cover my requirements of a box to experiment with networking to my Linux servers and test web pages on as well as giving me something to play with cross compiling some of my usual applications (for fun, if I get the time!). I have a suspision that I may well like OS X when I get my hands on it. ** end quote [Mark Benson] -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
