I found the G-List in searching for an answer to my browser problem. I hope there are some OS 9.x users here.
Three weeks ago, I started to get security certificate and data encryption error messages when trying to use PayPal. It is unusable due to most screens showing headers and nothing else. It was an ordeal trying to contact a human at PayPal, as I did not have the phone number and couldn't get it off of a blank screen. Emails I sent were answered with unhelpful canned replies. I got the number and then had a few 15-30 minute hold sessions, some abandoned, until I finally heard a person talking. This first tier of "service" blamed the problem on a corrupted cookie, and I was told to delete all cookies. The story winds on until... I was finally able to squeeze an email from an actual technician out of PayPal, and he said this: > The error you are encountering is a well-known and > documented issue with Internet Explorer's inability to recognize valid > security certificates. I was puzzled and skeptical, since I have been using Explorer to reach two banks and every site that I have ever bought something from with no security certificate problems. And, to reach PayPal until three weeks ago. And, I have similar PayPal errors using Netscape 4.75. Then, I did some searching and found blogs where people are having the same problems as I am. The word is that PayPal and Ebay are actively trying to squeeze out Mac users, starting with OS9.x and earlier. One monopolist helping another, the Corporate Way. People on this list probably have heard this already. So, PayPal recommended Netscape 7.0.2 and Mozilla 1.2.1-- which I rejected after reading how buggy it is. And I found Mozilla 1.3.1 by WaMCom (2003-7-23 issue). It is the personal project of apparently one programmer, who has taken the orphaned Mozilla and has apparently gone a long way to making it an actual user ready product for Mac OS 9, and maybe even 8, I'm not sure. They say it is largely de-bugged and https ready. Since I am an extremely low-skilled user, stability, buglessness and lack of software conflict are always my goals. http://wamcom.org/latest-131/ Are there any OS 9.x users on this list who have experience with either of these browsers? Or with both of them? Any horror stories or warm and fuzzy stories about either would be helpful. And, any good or bad about the Opera version that is for OS 9.x. PayPal didn't recommend this one, so I shy away since I am trying to solve a PayPal problem. If I end up with a browser that works better than Explorer 5.1.5, that will be fine, but it is only necessary to get one that lets me access PayPal and any other secure site that may in the future do whatever it is that PayPal did to their software.
