>Did they recommend a brand?

An Apple-branded or HP-branded cassette is really an all-new Canon
cassette, unless it is specifically stated to be "made of used and new
components", in which case it could be a remanufactured cassette (or,
with very good luck, it could be an all-new cassette).

I believe HP's printer division does have a cassette remanufacturing
operation in the U.S., perhaps in Boise, and cassettes which are
specifically stated to be remanufactured may be available at a
significant savings over all-new cassettes.

The days of local, small businesses which "reload" cassettes are long
gone. Cassette recycling and reloading has become a large-scale
operation, such as HP's. I doubt if Apple has a similar operation.

There are a few toner manufacturers, these being among the largest
industrial chemical manufacturing companies in Japan. It is possible that
Canon has a toner manufacturing operation among its "keiretsu" (an
association of semi-independent companies, all answering to the same
investment banking group, such as DKB, Dai-Ichi Kanyo Bank, etcetera).
Otherwise, I don't believe Canon makes its own toner.

I have used Apple-branded, Canon-branded, Xerox-branded, and locally
reloaded cassettes in my LW Pro 630 and LJ 4M printers, and all have
given good service.

Sure, an occasional cassette ... even an all-new cassette ... will be
bad. Usually on account of a defective "doctor blade", that blade-like
internal device which is part of the OPC drum cleaning function of the
cassette. This is a problem which leads to strange streaks or ghosts on
the output.

Don Lancaster, a reclusive inventor sited somewhere between Area 51 in
Nevada, and Phoenix in Arizona, recommends using "pixie dust" on
cassettes, in order to extend the lifetime of the OPC drum.

Sure, Lancaster sells this "pixie dust" stuff as one of his many
enterprises, but I think the stuff is real, and not as imaginary as Area
51 appears to be.

But, what with occasional Office-whatever sales on EX-compatible
cassettes, the cost of printing on a Pro 630 or a 4M is incredibly low
... down in the $0.03 per page area, and I can't see how that can be
improved upon, "pixie dust" not withstanding.

Bottom line: brand probably doesn't matter.
