imac woes

My wife's imac began acting up today. We thought it was going to sleep 
and not waking up, but I turned off sleep functions and the video still 
randomly shuts down. It might go 15 minutes, it might go 6 hours. The 
computer is still on but the screen goes black. I can tell the computer 
is still on because when I  use the keyboard to put the volume up or 
down, I can hear it beeping as it cycles through the volume settings.
Any ideas what is causing this? If you unplug it, you can always start 
back up again with good video.
