I was curious to find out what the real difference was between the two RAM sockets on the iMac's processor board (iMac 233). There is one below the board which calls for a narrower module (low profile) and one above board which specifies a high profile or normal width module. The Low profile modules are more expensive so I wondered if the wider ones would fit (and work) when installed in the below-board low profile sockets. I made the switch, the module fit the space, and the computer has been working OK on OS 10.2.8 ever since.

I went ahead and ordered a low profile higher capacity memory mod which I will install in the low profile socket so that everything will be according to spec, but I can't help wondering whether it is really necessary to require low and high profile RAM in these machines. I understand - but have not opened one up - that the flat screen iMacs also have a two - level RAM setup.
