Thank you, Jack and Tim, for your explanations. I'm not all the way up to
speed yet, but this is a good start.

Jack said --

<It is a much faster means of connectivity . USB 1 is theoretically 12
mps , fire wire is approximately 40 times faster. (USB 2 was developed
as a Firewire competitor, with the advantage of being backwards
compatible with USB 1.) The acceptance of Firewire wars are pretty
much over, even the wintel beige box guys include it now. It's the
dominant connectivity with DV video cameras and a lot of high bandwidth
prosumer devices.>

What's a "prosumer" device? And, about Firewire, do I really need it,
seeing how I don't do anything video at all, not even taking pictures
with a digital camera?

<It can be added to a Beige G3 with a PCI card, but you need to download
the necessary extensions from Apple to make it work as no knowledge of
Firewire was not built in to the Beige. The technology was still in
it's infancy when the Beige was produced. .>

also Tim said close enough to these lines --

<Your Beige is a different series G3 than the B&W's which also came with
different operating systems. You both can install a firewire card as
long as you have the operating system or extensions to support it.>

Oh, OK, so that's why I don't have it unless I go to the trouble of
someday buying it, downloading the proper extensions and installing it.
Understood. But just one thing. How come, if you know, Apple still called
the B&W a G3 when it was more advanced than the Beige and also required a
higher OS to run? That's really confusing of them.

Thanks again.
