Okay, just to make sure I understand you -- I'm not sure I do --
1. Do you mean to say that you can't boot up a B&W by pressing the power
key on the keyboard, or that it doesn't have one? If so, how do you turn
the B&W on for use?
2. I'm afraid I don't know the subtleties here. I mean, even as a G3
owner, I didn't understand the difference between a Beige G3 like mine
and a B&W G3 like that new fellow Daniel's until today, so I REALLY don't
know the difference between G4s. That being the case, what is a Yikes,
and what is a Sawtooth?
Thanks,
~Yersinia.
re 1: You cannot boot off of a firewire drive, not you cannot boot at all... in other words, if you connect a firewire drive that has a complete installation of, for example, OS 9.1, to a B&W, you cannot boot from it. That same firewire drive, attached to a Sawtooth G4, will boot the computer if you want it to...
re 2: Yikes is the very first G4, its design is very, very similar to the B&W G3, except it has a G4 processor. The video cards for both the B&W and the Yikes are PCI cards, and the processor is on a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) mounting. The Sawtooth G4 has a very different motherboard than the B&W and the Yikes. Among the notable differences are the video card is now using the AGP bus (much faster than PCI) and the processor is part of a special daughter board that plugs into the motherboard. On a Beige G3, a B&W or a Yikes, if you want to upgrade your processor, you essentially remove you existing ZIF/chip and put in a new one. On the Sawtooth and later G4s you change out the daughter board that carries the processor.
