i really wouldn't recommend burning media beyond it's rated speed for backups or anything critical. it is likely to cause interchange (i.e. between different drives) and stability problems. the speed media is rated at is based partially on an acceptable error rate, which you don't want to exceed (both recoverable and non-recoverable error rates). not having a coaster does not mean there aren't any bits that can't be read, it means those errors can be corrected on multiple reads at least most of the time. you only know about a media defect when it's so bad the the usual 15 or so re-read attempts all fail and the error correction coding can't recover it. media that has to be re-read multiple times just after being burned on the drive that burned it is not going to be terribly reliable on other drives and over time. it's a foolish way to save money on media, imho, ymmv. this is likely why that option has disappeared, likely many people have had problems with it, already and more will later.
