Most media is set at a top burn rate for the reasons you state. That's not want I want. I want to be able to take advantage of media that is rated at a faster burn speed. I may be wrong on this point but I think because of firmware, my Pioneer 106 has a top speed of 4x for DVD, so I can only burn DVD media at 4x. After i update the firmware, I will supposedly be able to burn at 8x on media that is rated at 8x.
