Just a word of caution here....files that are owned by root can be very important to running the operating system and you should be VERY CAREFUL before deleting any of them without knowing what you are doing.
There is a reason why you don't have the ability to delete those files. It's REALLY bad advice to tell somebody to go into the terminal and use 'sudo' to remove files without that bit of advice.

Hello,
In the past I added a couple of items to my Applications on my G3-mt computer using OS 10.2.8 and I decided I didn't need them. When I tried to put them in the trash, I got the following note-
"The operation could not be completed because this item is owned by root."
What does that mean?
Thanks

What it says, the item is owned by 'root' which is a special user account in Unix (and OS X), the 'superuser' who can do anything. It's a unix thing.

A number of programs in the Applications directory are owned by root (most typically system applications), but most administrative users should be able to delete them...

These files can be deleted via Terminal.

do:

sudo rm -rf <file name>

You'll be asked for your password and the file will then be deleted.
