I came in late on this, so I�m going to ask a basic question that may have already been addressed.
Have you checked your Extension Folder to be sure you have the Apple Enet or whatever ethernet extension you�re using, is installed. And that you don�t have it turned off with the Extension Control Panel or whatever they call that control extension in OS9, sorry I don�t have a OS9 computer here to look at. If it�s an older G3, I think you will need a crossover cable to link 2 devices directly. The newer machines should work with either type of cable. You�re right, it shouldn�t be this hard to network a few macs together.
