Any chance the scanner hasn't been used since the 10.3.8 update, it's only been a week or two. If it hasn't then it's possible the 10.3.8 update is teh culprit.
Have you checked Canon for an update.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, now that I think of it, I have not used the scanner since the OS update. I see by another post that I am not the only one to have this happen. Is there a way to go back to 10.3.7?
