Is the vid card the only place for a decoder to go? If memory
serves, the decoder on my iMac (graphite 400 mHz DV SE) is directly
on the DVD drive.
I have an external CD writer lying around I intend to use for the
time being, but would eventually like to get up to at least a combo
drive.

You have basically the same hardware as I do in my B&W. If you
watch a
DVD, what the the CPU usage? I was playing with it last night and
noticed
that double size windows (command-2) hit 100% on CPU usage (G3
450). The
7K is listed as having DVD decoding abilities, but doesn't seem to be
doing much of anything on my machine.
