Howdy,
I have an aging 350mHz G4 AGP Sawtooth with 512 mb RAM and an extra PCI
videocard so I have dual monitor support.
I'm caught between upgrading it and buying a new G5 iMac. I'd have to
go into debt for the iMac, but I can raise cash for the upgrade (I
really want a 2g DP G5, but out of range this year, so far). Can't do
anything about bus speed in the ol' Sawtooth, though.
I want to run GarageBand 2 and CuBase SX in a project studio. Also a
slightly older version of Maya, PhotoShop CS, and Final Cut.
Consequently, I am also involved with buying other hardware items, too
(large diaphragm studio recording mics, mic pres, multi-channel
recording hardware, and other studio gear). Just bought a new pair of
congas, too.
I like the idea of the Mercury Extreme for its plug 'n' play
simplicity. I haven't heard anything negative, but I sure could use
some advice, and real-world comparisons to other brands of upgrades.
TIA,
Ken N.
