Howdy,

I have an aging 350mHz G4 AGP Sawtooth with 512 mb RAM and an extra PCI videocard so I have dual monitor support.

I'm caught between upgrading it and buying a new G5 iMac. I'd have to go into debt for the iMac, but I can raise cash for the upgrade (I really want a 2g DP G5, but out of range this year, so far). Can't do anything about bus speed in the ol' Sawtooth, though.

I want to run GarageBand 2 and CuBase SX in a project studio. Also a slightly older version of Maya, PhotoShop CS, and Final Cut. Consequently, I am also involved with buying other hardware items, too (large diaphragm studio recording mics, mic pres, multi-channel recording hardware, and other studio gear). Just bought a new pair of congas, too.

I like the idea of the Mercury Extreme for its plug 'n' play simplicity. I haven't heard anything negative, but I sure could use some advice, and real-world comparisons to other brands of upgrades.

The best place to look for this info would be <http:// www.xlr8yourmac.com> they have an extensive database of anecdotal evidence about all sorts of upgrades (I won't call them reviews because they're mostly like "I got X, it works ok in my system Y, this is what I had to do.")

Stuff it full of memory first, then buy as fast a processor as you can get with the remaining money. With just 512 Mb you're going to really be choking those apps off, even with a fast processor.
