Well, I decided to reset it, and it came up into OS X. I then decided to run Disk Utility to verify disk permissions, walked away for five minutes, and when I came back, it had happened again! Hopefully, the screen will come back up when the process is done, but otherwise, well, it'll probably be back to 10.2.0 for me (unless that would make no difference, of course). Once again, any suggestions?
Never seen this behavior, so I'd guess you have a broken monitor or a broken connection. On your machine I'd guess optimizing will take a very long time, perhaps an hour.
If the system is running OK, I would _not_ mess with it anymore until you resolve the monitor problem. IOW, installing an operating system is the _last_ thing I would be trying to do if some part of my hardware was failing.
