Hello again,

Has anyone used an external floppy drive (USB) for any reason? Months ago I bought a Sony 2x speed floppy disk drive and just tonight finally got around to opening the box and trying to use it. I obviously never expected any problems, or I would have tried it right away...

My purpose is that I have a lot of "old" clip art (EPS files) that many years ago, I paid a small fortune for, and wish to now put on a Zip disk, or CDs, etc - and be able to use, if I want to. Since my Power Mac G4 (Sawtooth) nor my iBook G4 have floppy drives, I ponied up about $40 for this external thing and thought it would be a breeze (maybe time consuming, but workable.)

The instructions indicate that you do not need any "driver" for Mac OS 9.x nor for 10.1 (and up)... and in fact it appeared like only Windoze stuff was on the CD anyway (I looked, when I got frustrated). Supposedly you just plug the USB cable in and go...

Plugged the thing in to both my laptop and my desktop and with each one, I can't get it to work. On the desktop (running OS 9.2) I put a floppy in (factory-made clip art disk) and it tells me the disk is not readable by this computer... do I want to initialize (which I DO NOT!!!!) OR, the other result is when I put a floppy in (I have now tried a handful of different ones)... it does nothing - seems to power up (spin up?) the floppy, but it never does mount on the desktop.

On the laptop, it does not mount. A little green light comes on the drive like it is ready to - makes noise like it's spinning up, then NOTHING. No error message, nada.

Do I have a bum drive, or am I missing something? Back in 1991 this set of clip art was about $300 and even though it's "old"... now it is a matter of principle... and I WANT IT!

Any help or thoughts would be welcome.

Thank you,
Michelle the Frustrated
