I recently hooked up a friend's Mac up to a cable modem, and found it to be pretty much the same as working with DSL. Her cable modem was just a modem, and did not have a router. I connected a Belkin 4 port router to the cable modem, then connected the Mac to the router.

I would think connecting a router to the modem, then the Mac and the PC to the router would work for your friend in NJ. That would give them both a direct connection. It should not reduce the son's download speed. Although it sounds like someone should knock him back a couple of notches.
