Hi All,

I'm renting a DSL modem from Qwest which is giving me no end of grief and am wondering if there is anything out there that can work better for me. Your experiences would be appreciated. What I now have is an Actiontec model R1524SU. It says it is wireless ready but I have Cat. 5 cable run through the building. There are four computers attached, a Sawtooth, a B&W shortly to be replaced with a DA, a 5260 with a G3 upgrade and a P.C. The modem has always been glitchy but it keeps getting worse. Qwest is replacing it with one of the same. So now is the time to find something more stable. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Anand

For some reason Quest continues to use Actiontec modems despite many issue with them. I recommend you go to:
http://www.broadbandreports.com
then to forums on the right and then go down looking for US Telco support under that you will find the USWest/Qwest forum. Look through your question is likely already answered. Quest only provides tech support for the modems they sell. i believe there is a list of modems at this forum that work with Quest DSL. You have to signup to post on these forums but it's free to do so. Cable which my or may not be better in some parts of the country may or may not also be worse then DSL in some parts of the country! I had AT&T broadband(@home) cable for several years loved it and it was the only game besides dialup. Comcast bought them out. Prices go up every year at least and rude lame support . Support wasn't often needed but I learned to hate the company. Dumped them as soon as fast DSL was available where I live. To my surprise DSL is more stable then cable where I live. Unless your downloading large files all the time once you get up to fast DSL or cable not much reason to pay extra for 1 or even 2 MB of more speed IMHO. I am also saving $200.00 a year over cable with 3008/386 KB Earthlink/Covad DSL ( Qwest telco lines). I saw no differences in speed tests with 4 MB cable. Sorry I'm getting off topic in response to the lame just get cable responses . best of luck Will S
