A friend of mine is using Rogers as her ISP. She is also using a webhosting service for her web site. We have set up an email account using her domain name, but we have been unable to configure it correctly so that it works through
her Entourage email program. It simply will not send or receive emails.

"It simply will not send or receive emails." is not a very good description of what's happening. Can't tell if you forgot to open the garage door, put the car in drive instead of reverse, or... Please supply the actual error messages involved and an apropos chunk of the mail client's session log.

FWIW...

Tell the mail client to fetch mail from the web hosting service's POP3 (or IMAP) server directly.

If the web hosting service provides an SMTP server (good ones do), then tell the mail client to use it to send mail and ENABLE authorization. If not, then use Rogers' SMTP server and DISABLE authorization (you're on Rogers' network so you probably don't need it). Set the "From" address to be her [EMAIL PROTECTED], not her rogers address.

Main issues involved:

0. Entourage sucks.

1. In order to slow down spammers, many ISPs are blocking the SMTP port 25 at their boarders. This forces you to use the ISPs SMTP server, or use the 3rd party server via an alternate port. Rogers' web site support area will tell you if this is happening, and provide appropriate settings.

2. Auth or no auth, regular auth or SSL or ... These are settings that should be available from the involved party's web site support area.

P.S. In addition, her Powerbook is connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme basestation. Could the basestation be an issue?

Probably not, unless you're having a DNS problem because the web hosting company has foo'd the domain name entries (MX, A, etc). We can check that if you provide details.

(not doing very well at resisting the temptation to make wisecracks about the use of unreliable Microcrap software when there are at least a dozen alternative email clients available - Apple Mail, Eudora, Thunderboid, etc)
