Hi,
as someone pointed out some time ago rather than bad/good
manufacturers there might be bad/good models.
I personally had luck with Maxtor/WD and awful experiences with
Seagates. But as said the models might have had more to do than the
brand. After all the technology used in drives of the same generation
is similar across manufacturers.
I'd buy, however, from a reliable seller and test the drive for a few
weeks with non critical data to see how it works, after that I assume
it's OK.
It is important to understand that if your data is so valuable you need
to back it up! No drive is ever infallible, and something as trivial as
a light power surge can kill your drive and data.
A Google search on a particular model might give you interesting info.
